A Little Hatin’ is Good for the Soul

by Emon on August 30, 2007

I’m baaack from my Las Vegas trip. It was on business so nothing really happened to have stayed in Vegas. Anyway…

I’ve had the above title in my head for quite some time. It was originally called something more serious which I won’t get into. So what am I trying to say? Everyday some talk show motherfucker on television will tell us to have a positive attitude towards everything or to ask ourselves this or look deep into our wishing well that…are you getting clued in to who I am talking about by now? Here’s another clue: sounds like Dr. Fill. :)

Well, agreeing with Deepak Chopra here, being positive all the time is the most stressful thing to do. I’d say being positive all the time is denying your true feelings. After all, should we be censoring our feelings? I’d read somewhere that the former Sec. Gen of UN, Kofi Annan never got angry in his life. Really! That’s a recipe for going postal someday, if you ask me. Of course I don’t believe it completely - both what I read and the recipe for going postal. He must’ve gotten pissed and let some un-UN like words fly; he is a person after all.

Why should you be hatin’ when being angry will suffice? Alright, I’ll compromise and call it positive hatin’. I spell it that way so it takes the edge off the word when spelled with an ‘e’. Everyone’s hatin’ - you, me, her, him, them, us, and everyone. If you’ve gotten angry, you are nothing but a sensitive soul. If the man sticks it to you every day and you don’t get angry and hate the man for doing this to you, I’m afraid your spine has been removed while you were sleeping. Hatin’ didn’t even escape Gandhi - by the way, I hate fuckers who spell his name “Ghandi” as in Randy - when he faced racism in South Africa. Yes he was angry and was hatin’ the establishment that nurtured hatin’ - tit for tat. He, however, chose to express his hate with wit and wisdom. He was hatin’ the way the British government sucked the Indian people dry like leaches but didn’t hate Daniel Day-Lewis for taunting him on the street (oops…movie reference :p ). Anger and hatin’ go hand in hand. It should. Come on, have you ever been angry with love? Have you ever been angry just because?

A little hatin’ goes a long way. Hatin’ the way you’re being treated, hatin’ the way you see others being treated, hatin’ the way you treat others. Hatin’ yourself is good too. It makes you see yourself with a critical eye. But I don’t mean hate yourself like, “I hate my life and my existence”. Remember those are two different things. People who love themselves are never critical of themselves. I’ve done my own share of hatin’ myself. For example, I’ve treated people the way they didn’t deserve to be treated and hated myself. It made me look at myself and say, “You fucking idiot, (s)he/they love(s) you. And if you can’t handle that don’t be a dick to them”. That doesn’t always do the trick, but I’m learning. You should be able to say, “Professor, I hate the way you spell my name and make fun of my accent”, “Billy, I hate the way you embarrass me in public places”, or “I hate Jazz.” There was once a band because Johnny hated Jazz.

Age is not the badge of maturity. There are 8 year old grannies and there are 80 year old babies. Watch Haley Joel Osment’s video clips at talk shows when he was barely 3 feet tall and then watch some of these celebrities (Hollywood, Politics, etc etc) and you’ll see what I mean.

Tangent. So, all I’m saying is: Learn hatin’ as a form of meditation that leads to positive action. Don’t be a dick and hate something you don’t understand. Gandhi himself understood the system and he hated the parts that corrupted it. MLK Jr. understood the system very well and he too hated the bad parts - read his papers on the country’s economy and you’ll think the man is Nostradamus. None of them hated things they didn’t understand. That’s the key. Don’t hate what you don’t understand. Don’t act on hate alone. Don’t be hatin’ hatin’. It’s a good thing. Clear thinking comes from clarity in feeling. Should you or should you not feel love, anger or hate? Should you or should you not like something? What’s with the confusion. Feel it, dammit. It’s your knowledge and your openness that will process the hatin’ and lovin’ in a meaningful way. Fuck being positive all the time. It gets my natural feel-balance out of whack. I’d like to be hatin’ and be part of a solution that makes for better living, better lovin’, and better creatin’.

Wanna know the best example of hatin’ done right? Comedy. Think about it. Ciao ciao.

Hey E!

Welcome back..wondered where you’d been.

Hate has never fueled me; anger has. Anger has been a stellar motivator. Caused me to right some wrongs. Caused me to create when there was a void.

In this day and age, I thing it’s almost PollyAnna-ish to even attempt to look at things positively–all the time. Can’t be done if you ask me.

Now, I’m not saying we should replace it with pessimism and negativity–just not unbridled optimism.

I call that being realistic.

Glad you’re back.
