Oh No, He’s Taking Pictures Now?!

by Emon on August 13, 2007

I’ve recently bought a new phone that has a camera in it (worth mentioning since I’ve never owned one with a camera). Therefore the world (some readers) has to endure the pictures I take with it.

I’m no closet photog waiting to break out and declare my love for um…lenses. One statement I take true to heart: Fuck the rule of thirds. But…yes, I like to take pictures. I try and take pictures when I have a camera around me; I’ve never owned a camera myself. Well, maybe my dad’s Yashica way back when, but that has always sat alone in its case because film cost, washing, and developing was a luxury I couldn’t afford to play ‘experiment’. I did take a photography course back home but that was because most of my ‘friends’ took it. It’s kinda silly since during the whole course we never took pictures. We talked about it quite a bit though. Talked about how if the right camera and the right lenses were put in front of us we too would make staff member at National Geographic.

Thanks to digital amateurs like me can be forgiven easily for wasting snapshots. So what am I getting at? I mean why all this bullshit that runneth between the words scribed above? Not that you care but I thought sharing some of the pictures I take, by whatever means possible, you’ll get to see how I look at things. I can talk about it all day and most of the night but a picture will pretty much say it all.

Anyway, the following are taken with - and for a while will be - my new Samsung M510 (1.3 MP). I don’t care if they look pixelated and fuzzy and blurry and over-saturated or crooked or if they broke the S-curve rule or whatever some of you photogs complain about. Most of the times I don’t even know why I’d taken a particular picture. I do love it when I’ve captured something by accident. Then again, it may have been that my eyes had picked up on something and acted on it before my brain found a way to let me know what it was. Makes sense, the gobbledygook?

For example, it was a bright and beautiful Saturday morning. On my routine walk to Starbucks I thought of giving the camera a try and see if it could catch a little bit of the beautiful weather. I quickly snapped this and on uploading it that night realized I’d completely missed the bicycle guy. For a second it looks like he’s floating, doesn’t it? I like how the left row of buildings leans a bit. Complete accident! Or was it?

Bicycle on Ft. Washington Ave

This one was a day later, around 8:30 am. Starbucks. Liked the way the building looked in that light.

Walking over to the Apple store on 5th Ave and 57th. Noticed this one light with hanging all by itself, lonely while his other light-buddies were turned off. Poor guy. He should be a proud little bulb because he’s hanging off of the scaffolding of the former Plaza hotel. Mean anything to anyone? Perhaps Neil Simon. ;)

Last but not least, since I’ve mentioned Apple store, what good would it be if I didn’t show you what my blog looks like on iPhone…albeit before you double-tap to zoom in. Err, sorry, could’ve taken a much better picture than that. While I’m on the topic, I’ve played with the phone for a while and just love it. Didn’t have much problem navigating through it and didn’t have problems typing on it either. My love for pinching was in full display as I resized photos into different sizes with pinch-fingers. Reading stuff on it is nice…and clear. Read an article or two on the NY Times. Funny little button no one mentioned, or I’ve failed to notice, is the “.com” button. You type in Emonome and just press the “.com” button. Voila! There’s a YouTube icon on the phone’s menu that takes you to the site directly. However, when I tried to view the video on my blog (the Icehouse video), it didn’t play it because, I guess, no flash plugin installed on Safari. I’ll stop there. You’re probably sick and tired of iPhone reviews by now. I know, this madness can only stop when one is in your pocket.

That little camera phone of yours isn’t too bad, actually. But I know you have some photoshop skillz so why don’t you get rid of the weird color cast on that last iphone photo (and sharpen it up a bit, while you’re at it) ;-)

I guess I could do that, couldn’t I. But it was late at night and I wanted to get the post done with. If I started tinkering with the photo I’d have spent forever.
