Two days before her 21st birthday, Moira disappeared. She never revealed to anyone where or why she’d gone for a whole week. Not even Brent whom she actually decided to love back. Oh, yes, we didn’t go over how they got together, did we?
But there’s a shoe box titled “Year One” Ron found when he was 15 that might shed some light on that. You know how he kept journals? If we turned to one of those journals’ 36th page, we’ll see this:
December 22
They’re fighting again. Came up to the attic and found shoebox stuff titled ‘Us: Year One.’
1. Flyer from a concert. “Meditation from Thais” is underlined with pen. Notes scribbled on the back.
2. Handwritten on a torn piece of paper from a notebook – “Wherever you’d like to go
”
3. Flattened out petal remains from a white rose.
4. Ticket stubs to the movie ‘Chinatown’. On the flip side to one is a time scribbled “8:19pm”.
5. Receipt (Scribbled. Ineligible.)
6. Book of matches. On the inside flap, scribbled, “I’m sorry.”
7. Birthday card to Moira. “You’re barely legal no more
” [Even Ron rolled his eyes on that one]
8. A Polaroid of Moira, smiling. Her dark shades takes over half her face.Ron doesn’t remember her mother ever smiling like that. Blurry. Another time scribbled “8:51pm”
9. Receipt from a diner. (They had pancakes & coffee)
10. A neatly tied stack of envelopes, ribbon and all.
11. A….(…Mom calling. finish later)
Well, now you know a little bit of Moira and Brent’s back history. Big up to Ron’s list!
To be clear, when Moira disappeared two days before her 21st birthday, she did not take Ron with her. Mm, who may or may not have known where Moira had disappeared to, took care of both Ron (barely one) and his father, a dazed and confused Brent. All Brent had was a letter from Moira telling him not to worry, not to look for her, and not to ask her mom questions. That she’d be back, and that she needed to do this if she ever wanted to move on and be happy.
Funny thing is, Brent did most of the things she’d asked/told him not to do. Other than that, I think he had the right to be a big fucking mess!
